The biggest improvement to the XBLA remake is the solid 60 frames per second and the upgraded skyboxes. The switch between the two appears to take zero effort or time, and can be done whenever without having to pause the game. Throughout the video the player uses the rumored feature of switching the game’s graphics between the original Nintendo 64 textures and the remake textures on the fly.

The 2007 remake of Goldeneye 007 was planned to be built off of, " N64's existing source code and art assets," with graphical and networking improvements while the gameplay itself would largely be untouched. While Xbox is no stranger to reviving dead franchises, the ex- Goldeneye 007 devs say that there is little chance for a Goldeneye 007 remake on Xbox, unless Microsoft buys Nintendo. The video showcases several missions including Dam, Facility, Surface, Cradle and Aztec. Unfortunately for fans, Goldeneye 007 was one of the titles not carried over.Įventually, another version of Goldeneye 007 was released in 2010 and, while it was positively received, it was not the same as what was being developed in 2007. However, as one of the developers puts it, " When it was put to Nintendo, everyone there approved it. Except they didn't check with the one guy who mattered." Apparently, there was one, unnamed Nintendo executive who shut down the project, saying something, " along the lines of, 'There is no way a Nintendo game is coming out on a Microsoft console.'" As mentioned above, Xbox purchased Rare and most of its titles. That was all the team needed to hear to continue work on the Xbox 360 version. At first, the Goldeneye 007 team was told, " The rights were all cleared, with no condition that anybody had to work on a version for a Nintendo console or any other requirements.

The biggest hurdle was getting permission from the various rights holders: " Nintendo (the original publisher on N64), Activision (who had secured the film series' game rights at the time), and MGM/OEM (the film series' overseers)." Initially, the team worked on the game modestly, as they waited for verdicts from every involved party before going ahead full speed. With the game's cancellation once again becoming a hot topic, Ars Technica reached out to several members of the Xbox Goldeneye 007 development team to hear their side of the story. For more than a decade, the only information surrounding the situation was that there was a disagreement between Xbox and Nintendo. Xbox has since remastered/remade many Rare titles, but Goldeneye 007 fell just shy of getting the same treatment, for reasons largely unknown. With the playable files for Goldeneye 007 leaking, the game's abrupt 2008 cancellation has once again become a talking point online. Xbox owns the rights to most of Rare titles, but the company's attempts to remake the most beloved 007 game stalled just months before its planned release.ĭespite maintaining a close relationship, Nintendo opted not to buy Rare when it had the chance, opening the door for Xbox to come and buy the studio, along with most of its titles.
